petite anglaise

domain pain

20.02.2006 8:36 pmmisc

I was off work feeling under the weather today, and it seems that my newly migrated – to a bigger server as my host was threatening to pull the plug if I didn’t upgrade – site was having sympathy pains. Much installation stress and several expensive phone calls later and, fingers crossed, we seem to have lift off again, albeit with the loss of a few comments I hadn’t had chance to back up in the database.

And I needn’t have bothered having my hair dyed. It turned white overnight with worry.

If you have any shopping to do on Amazon, please consider clicking on one of my “reading” links in the sidebar to do so (you don’t have to buy my recommended book, anything you buy on the site will in fact earn me a very small commission). I love writing petiteanglaise, but it does cost me money to maintain this site, with its growing bandwidth needs, and sometimes it is money I can ill afford.

Right, off to bed, and hopefully back tomorrow.

  1. I’m off to click on the amazon link – it’s the least a girl can do to help swell the Petite coffers.

  2. me too, am off shopping on amazon…

  3. Ah yes, I have read the Time Traveller’s Wife, in fact I had it in my sidebar for a while, when I read it for the second time. Marvellous book, which I hope won’t be ruined by the fact that the film rights belong to Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston…

  4. I still visit your blog when I can and am glad you are having such success with it. I totally understand the bandwidth problem/cost, but aren’t you happy to be so popular?! My bandwidth issue is mostly what I’m able to keep in my head at one time. Gee…when does Spring get here to clear the air? Bye for now petite.

  5. Petite, just to let you know, Bloglines still isn’t picking up this post, though I know it was there last night. Good luck with your bandwith issues.

  6. Hiya
    Hope you’re feeling better!
Just for info – don’t know if it’s to do with domain change or whatever – but site is ultra slow…

  7. How pretentious am I? I read the title to this post as ‘Tomorrow bread’ – with a typo…

Thought the Alice Munro looked interesting actually, so will buy through you when I’ve ploughed my way through the mountain of unread books on my bedside table. Site is very slow – I’d ask for my money back if I were you :)

  8. I’ll have to check out the Amazon sidebar. I definitely love visiting your site and would hate to see it “off” the blogosphere, if even for a day :( .

  11. I would rush to the rescue wearing me Marks & Spencer’s plastic armour and brandishing me lil toy sword…but… its a tad far from New Zealand. The cyber carrier pigeons must have had their café noir court(wots Bable Fish like at translations by the way?)this morning, 12sec download time to read your current post, and 50 sec to fully download your blog site, which is not bad at all and par for the course for 56k dial-up here.God knows how many servers there are between my lil aptiva and the world of petiteanglaise. I’ve always said that with my book reading addiction, the fastest way to bankruptcy was to shop at Amazon.com, but to add to the coffers I’m off there now for the first time. Congrats over your recent blog award, keep up the good work. Regards from NZ.

  12. Thank you to the kind folks who have emailed me with techie help offers and even free/cheap hosting. I am going to look into transferring to an alternative host, as this one is simply not working for me – luckily I spotted the 10 day “satisfied or your money back” clause in the conditions générales de vente which may just permit me to get a good night’s sleep…

Here’s hoping we won’t crash again tomorrow, but if so, bear with me, I hope to have this sorted in a week tops.

Oh, and I am aware of the feed error – thanks for pointing this out – although am not sure what can be done to solve it yet. But I’m sure the good people on the Wordpress support forums will have an answer for me soon…

  14. Passes petite a roll of cyber duct tape…whatever you do DON’T ditch Wordpress as your ‘theme’, it’s so tasteful compared with some of the clunky looking blogs around. Hang in there :) Regards from NZ.

  17. I only just got this on bloglines today, even though it is three days old, I was getting the red exclamation mark until then.

  18. yes, it seems to have been related to me moving server, I think it took a while to update. Or something. Their problem though, not mine…
