Would any of my kind readers be willing to record the Journal Télévisé de 20H on TF1 on Saturday and Sunday and let me have a copy? A film crew are on their way - how much shall we bet that I am asked to stand chatting in the kitchen while making a cup of tea? - and I will no doubt end up being one of those end fillers that provide light entertainment after all the serious presidential election talk. But I’m not 100% sure which day it will be broadcast.

Clearly if anyone is savvy enough to pop the segment on YouTube, that would be even better, so I can link to it here.

I’ll just go back to my quaking now. I hate cameras. I hate video cameras even more. And obviously it’s in French. Eeek.

    This is where we discover how many of your readers are based in France. TF1 doesn’t reach Berkshire, unfortunately. Thanks to long wave, I have been able to listen to France Inter and Europe 1 recently, but no TV. And no French edition of Glamour either (sniff). Best wishes to Tadpole for quick healing. You did very well on Richard & Judy, you will be fine for this as well.

  8. Pierre L. - I live in Cheshire and I can get TF1 (not wishing to boast!) and all the other free French channels. All you need is an analogue receiver and a satellite dish - set your satellite dish up in the direction of the Hotbird satellite (I think that’s the one – but a quick search on the web should find the location anyway) and Bob’s your uncle – as they say! The analog signal is broadcast to cover the whole of France and coincidentally covers quite a bit of the UK too (I think it’s beamed down in a big circle!). We bought our satellite receiver in France - so all the frequencies for the French channels were pre-saved and we didn’t need to fiddle around trying to find them – better than paying one of these companies I’ve seen that claim to be able to get you French tele but just end up charging you a fortune to get TV5 (& who wants that!). Sorry to hijack this post! If you need any advice let me know – happy to help!

I have been trying to avoid having a satellite dish, but with the great analog switch off, and the fact that we don’t officially have a Freeview signal, I may well be forced to go that way. But we must stop this two-way conversation or Petite will be really fed up with us! Sorry Petite.

    Once upon at time my family and I appeared on telematin (I was 8 at the time, not very awake at that time in the morning and really not in any state to be put infront of a camera - oh the shame!) anyway the point is that the tv company gave us a video of the show afterwards, so you could always ask TF1 for a copy afterwards.
    Also a heads up, I noticed you got press coverage in Le Figaro on Wednesday this week. Your case could even become an official precedent - fancy!!
    Anyway hope it all goes well.

  15. For the rest of us, we might be able to get the Journal Televise online–I am not sure if they put the entire broadcast on, but they definitely have at least clips!

  20. Oh my God. You realise you’d better think of something intelligent to say about the election and how the English see it? Because the French will not want to imagine that the rest of the world is not quite as interested in this as they are.
    Sorry I can’t record the news, my VCR has never been the same since my youngest son put a toy car inside. I may have aggravated matters somewhat by trying to force in a video after the car (which I hadn’t noticed) muttering “what’s wrong with this bloody thing now” thereby rending any damage which *might* have been temporary, irreparable. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that someone out there will YouTube it.

  26. oxo - the More4 thing was horrible. I was sitting in front of a blue screen with an earpiece in, I couldn’t see the presenter even on a screen, and no-one gave me the faintest idea what they were going to ask…and then they really put me on the spot. I squirmed. Literally.

    I think I did better on Richard and Judy. I must stick that on YouTube sometime, I have it on a DVD.

    But yes, media training might be nice. I turned down the chance to appear on Laurent Ruquier’s show on France2 the other day because I just didn’t think I could handle it…

  42. Petite, you can pull it off if you record the program onto your hard drive by using a “card” called “WinTV”. I’m in France right now and have access to the French programming, but no access to my WinTV card as I left it in NYC. :0( If someone else is able to run to their local FNAC or something, they can record it for you and upload it to the web, to a server, or to YouTube for that matter. Hope this helps. :0)

    I discovered your blog a few days ago and spend quite some time reading it with much fun, mostly for you writing about your love for your child and you picturing Parisians (among who I am) with much talent. So no doubt you will success in novel writing. I’m waiting for your dedicace venue at WH Smith ! (Please, do one !)

    Being a bit parano myself, I thing you were right to turn down the F2 now. I used to work in law firms, although not directly in the field of labor law and I now the tricky-mean-dirty habits of presenting a case. I wonder if you should not be cautious about all that stuff and going so public in view of the appeal proceedings, if any. Judges do not like much publicity. and building precedent is not their cup of tea either. I am sure that you have discussed this with your lawyer already.

    It is a shame, however, that this could impeed your freedom of speach. But, reading the closing arguments presented at the hearing (which more or less are also intended to stress you so that you drop the case or be less “arrogant” while discussing a settlement) I bet they might use anything. Remember : money damages is not a problem for corporate bodies (unless it is a big big amount) because it does not really impact the balance sheet and lawyers fees do not come from the managers pocket (unlike the fees paid by the ex-employee) ; partners in a CPA firm do not really care either (unless their clients make fun of it), time of the proceedings works on the side of the company, not the ex-employee.

    Contrary to Anglo-saxon culture, money is dirty in France and money obtained for dammages is so hardly obtained (which is a shame) that your contract deal might become a problem in court as well as a source of easy joke on you. Get serious advice !
    Refer to the case of the (not so)lasy lady who wrote a book about being paid for no work in the French electric power supply public firm.

    That being said, should not prevent you from enjoying ! Real life is ahead with the angoisse de la page blanche and much fun with TP.

  61. Well, quite nice end filler though… Besides, it got me to to find your blog! I’ve never been a fan of blogs, but I do enjoy some british humour (you don’t get to much of that in France! I’ve never understood french humour…) and as a swedish expartriate in (God knows why!) southern France, it should be quite interessting to have a look, at least, ‘could be a nice “evening filler”.   67. Hello Petite. Congratulations. I have just been watching your piece on TF1 (about 28 minutes into the bulletin, to save the other readers having to search). You did extremely well, I thought. You spoke French beautifully (as one might expect after all these years in France). You sounded articulate and spoke with no hesitation; it seems to me that you would do fine in live program. After all this, I hope someone will publish a French version of your book - then I would buy that as well as the English one.

I’ve read yours very intermittently since you became ‘famous’ last year and even more famous this year in winning your unfair dismissal. Did your firm decide not to appeal in the end? Congratulations on your piece on TF1 - my A-level French from 20+ years ago isn’t up to translating in real time, but you do appear to come over very well. Good luck in the future with the book and hope Tadpole’s lip heals OK.
