I made this website today, for a friend, and am still marvelling at the wonderfulness of iWeb (which I’d never used before, but it was soooo intuitive, like every Mac app I’ve ever used, that I didn’t have to look at a single help page…and the whole thing only took about two hours.)

And yes, the irony of me spending time on designing a site for a play all about unrequited love does not escape me. There are so many layers of irony here (the Amélie character being a writer, or so I’m told) that I’ve lost count.

Sadly, my three week holiday (mostly spent on facebook/lastfm/myspace and sleeping off nights out on the town) is now over, and it will be back to serious editing work for the next month as I race towards the 4 July deadline.

Wish me luck…

  1. Loving your work.

Sleeping off nights out are what holidays are for in my humble opinion. Much better than embarking on DIY projects or spending chilly nights under canvas and taking cold showers :)

  2. Good Luck–I look forward to reading your book!!

  3. The last deadline was “end of second draft” if I remember correctly. So what is this deadline for? It is easier to give you cyber encouragements if we know what you are aiming for. Best of luck in any case. And 4th January still seems like a long way for us to wait (and probably causes you great panic).

  4. 4 July is the final deadline…

  5. Good Luck Petite, Jan 08 is not that far to wait. I returned from living in london last year and have already been back in Australia for six months much to my surprise when I think about it. So another six months or so for a petite book will be worth the wait. No plans to release it earlier though to ride the Xmas market and get on everyones wish list?

  6. are you still away? i am - working on a deadline of my own. just can’t get focussed during the day.

  7. sorry - i meant awake. see how knackered i am? this book is going to make no sense at all.

  8. 4th of July. Independence Day here in the States. Get the irony?

  11. Hi Petite. I used to love iweb too. In fact, I still do. Totally intuitive.

Just a word of warning though: if you build a big site with it it takes bloody AGES to load up. Because it reads everything as images. Even words. Which is the very reason, of course, it’s such a great program. You can manipulate text very freely indeed. After a few months of blogging with it, though, I got right royally pissed off.

Plus, it’s expensive. And you can’t just use the iweb feature alone. You have to sign up to all this email crap too. Which if you actually use is great and everything, but if not…well it’s a bit of a waste of money. Obviously.

    Anyway. Toodles. :)

Merde ;) ! Looking forward to seeing your first published book in my favorite bookstore here in KL.

    Merde … merde … merde.

  15. Go for it !!

So all PA’s reader will have to wait in queue @ brentanos to buy the book at midnight, Harry Poter release style? ;)

  16. Oh yes, life presents many curiosities that motivates you to smile. That, or I would be willing to bridge connections between electronegativity and romance if given the opportunity. :| Facebook really needs a club for public admissions of criminal activity, mostly stalking. :P Last.FM has become a tragic documentation of your musical predilections, in that why does the bar for one pop artist project itself fully across the page, whilst everyone else only inches forward by a hundred pixels?

  17. Good luck!

If you need an extra set of eyes on the draft, I’d be happy to help.

Nice site - very clean looking.
(And strangely enough, that’s the second time I’ve said that to someone in as many days.)

I meant to ask, what did you think of Cloudstreet?

  18. Good luck, but I don’t think you’ll need it. Very capable lady, I’d say.

  19. Way too much navel gazing from your contributors to this post.

Chill-out while you can, late nights/early mornings web designing are not the best use of time! Wine, sex & sleep are much better for prolonged life, good-looks and mental disposition.

Good luck with meeting the deadline.

Shame about the January release, I’ve told all the women in my life that their Xmas pressies will be late this year. So that’s at least 2 sales of the book! (If you pass that on to the publishers, can we get you in to the Bestseller list before publication?)

  20. That’s a very nice website for only 2 hours work pa.

Did you do the graphics in that time too?

  21. The website looks lovely - nice clean lines. Last FM is a real time-eater, isn’t it?
Hopefully the break has left you refreshed and reinvigorated…

  22. Bonne m*rde! I can’t hardly wait to read your first best-seller book so I wish you all the best of luck, since you obviously was born under the stars of talent and inspiration (to name a few).

At last I’ve found another Mac user … if you are using iWeb, you are probably using the latest version of iPhoto 6.0.6

If you are, can you let me know because I have a question that I can’t find ANYONE to answer!

    belle | 5:13 pm

  28. Good luck!
How’s Tadpole? you haven’t said much about her lately

    Stavroulix | 5:57 pm

  29. You made that?! Very nice! I couldn’t wrap my head around the web building stuff on our new mac but I am a brand new mac user so I am not surprised. I think my most-repeated reaction was one of disbelief - “It’s that easy? No way! I don’t believe it! I must make it more difficult for myself!”

I am building my new web site just on a blog platform and am having a designer make it prettier for me. My talent stops at the writing!

Well done! And good luck on getting back at it.

  32. Too bad it won’t make the Christmas list. A lot of blogges would like your book as a present.

  33. Rapidweaver is what Apple tweaked to become iWeb.
    I believe.
It’s better for bigger, more complicated sites, and only a slightly more complicated interface.

    Good luck with the deadline

  34. I love deadlines..

.. especially the whooshing sound they make as they go past.

  35. Hang in their, Petite, I’m anxious to read your opus.
    Bonne Chance from Seattle

  36. Very nice. I take it that you are happy with your move to the Mac? Anything about it you don’t like?

    David | 6:35 am

  37. Christmas is a very singular time in the publishing world - it’s all about cookery books and ghostwritten celebrity books à la Posh Spice. I’d rather stay out of that territory, to be honest…

    petite | 9:45 am

  38. It will just have to be a late Christmas present to myself, that’s all.

    Pierre L | 11:08 am

  39. I can’t wait until Jan 08 - a book tour that includes a detour to a shop in Leicester would be well received!

    Good luck Petite!

  40. The 4th of July is my birthday not that that has anything to do with something.

  41. Petite , I didn’t know you were such a geek ;) Good luck for you book… are you going to teach us movie making (”how I created my own TV spot for my book”) in your next post?

  42. Hi there
I recently started my own blog - its in its infancy and has a long way to go. I came across yours via the Weblog Review and am hooked now. I thought I’d leave a comment to introduce myself.

The website looks good as does your blog, and I look forward to your book coming out.

  43. geek, moi?

Did you not see the cross stitched BBC Micro 32K? And read the bit where I used to be addicted to playing “Elite”?

    Of course I’m a geek!

As for the video - watch out for “one night with petite”, hitting the interwebnet near you any day now…

  44. Ahhh, le Beau Danube Bleu, le ballet des graphismes vectoriels lors de l’accostage manuel, la caresse manille du pourvoyeur de tout ce plaisir…

(Despite the proverb, my little Acorn Electron never did grow up into a mighty BBC… )

    Ajay | 8:08 am

  45. …Does that mean you will be posting less frequently?

I note your insomnia (from facebook). Was trying to work out the time difference with Paris to see whether it was as bad as it looked or worse.

You need to get some Ylang Ylang… nice bath… job done.

    Statto | 8:35 am

  46. Good luck with that deadline. And that website is awfully pretty and thorough for a day’s work. iWeb must really be easy to use.

And, are all French actresses bloody gorgeous or am I just constantly looking in all the right places?
